Steelace
This project was to develop a sunscreen facade system out of stainless steel for an existing building in the Bowery. I worked in a group for the Surface, Screen and Structure class. I developed the design concept, which was inspired by Islamic jali screens. I also used my construction knowledge to develop a detailed system for how the panels work together as unitized facade system. Our group worked together to do a basic drawing set. We worked with Maloya laser and FACE design to fabricate sample panels for midterm and final reviews. I was able to gain experience working with mild steel and stainless steel in bending, grinding, welding, drilling and finishing. The final panels we constructed at half scale demonstrated the four-corner connection of facade panels, and how each facade panel joins with a fixed and free end.
