Adaptable Rainfrastructure - Mumbai, India

This final studio included a trip to Mumbai, India, where our design focus was decided. The first part of the semester was research and I focused on the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which led me to research reservoirs, Mumbai’s water supply, climate and urban conditions.

I was deeply moved by visiting the slums and reading research on the daily struggle for water for millions of Mumbai’s slum and pavement dwellers. Thus, my project focus is to empower people with limited water access to invest in and build a rainwater collection & filtration system for their community area. The project was to possibly use money already spent for buying water and installing unreliable municipal taps. It would also use all inexpensive local materials and methods to build an easily adaptable system. Lastly, it will create a pleasant and vibrant community space in existing open areas, as well as functioning for water collection and filtration.
